Many people find it hard to believe that you can suffer with acne at any age and do not have to be a teenager. Although not confined to teenagers, it is usually at this point in their lives when it is more likely to show and the figures indicate that as many as 9 out of 10 people will have acne at some time during their life.

Our sebaceous glands produce oil called sebum which fouls up the hair follicles and contributes to acne but this is not the only substance responsible. It is this oil which is trapped inside the pores which creates the recognizable pimple but this seems to be a more modern condition amongst the population.

But the clogged pores which are the main cause of acne can also be the result of contemporary substances like cosmetics, pollution and even the hormone adjustments many young people go through. Other factors can be responsible to, like the consumption of too much junk and reprocessed food, which is high in unhealthy sugars.

For a recurring or severe case of acne, many sufferers turn to a dermatologist for a more aggressive treatment and in most cases, a prescribed routine and medication can help to treat acne. In most cases, a follow-up visit will be scheduled so that the doctor may monitor the patient’s progress and determine whether additional steps should be taken to treat the problem. It is very important to avoid aggravating, or disrupting, any and all acne blemishes otherwise, the sufferer will face a possible bacterial infection from dirt or germs that may reside underneath the fingernails.

Unfortunately just because fingernails look clean does not mean they are, and as bacteria are usually invisible to the naked eye, there is no guarantee that an infection cannot be passed on. Therefore any contact between an acne sufferer’s hands and affected areas should be avoided if possible.

Unfortunately, acne does seem to have a hereditary link so if you mother and father had acne ten you will also probably suffer as well, bearing in mind that the number of individuals with perfect skin in the world is very low. By far the biggest reason for acne is when a youth child enters into puberty and the change in hormone levels associated with that period.
